Eileen Ivers Beyond the Bog Road
Adult $35, University Park Student $20, 18 and Younger $24
Friday, March 19, 2010 @ 7:30 PM: Eisenhower Auditorium
Internationally renowned violinist Eileen Ivers’ Beyond the Bog Road—a multimedia concert of music, story, dance, and film—celebrates the journey of immigrants. The production—featuring Ivers, her band Immigrant Soul, guest musicians, and dancers—tells the story of Irish immigrants’ impact on America and America’s impact on them. Ivers grew up in a culturally diverse neighborhood of the Bronx, but her spiritual home is the Emerald Isle. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Ivers began playing traditional Celtic music when she was 8. She won nine All-Ireland fiddle championships, starred as the lead fiddler in Riverdance, and helped found the band Cherish the Ladies. In addition to her work with Immigrant Soul, the fiddler performs as a soloist with major symphony orchestras and appears as a guest with prominent musicians of many genres. Sponsors: John L. Brown Jr. and Lynn Sidehamer

A Year with Frog and Toad
Adult $18, University Park Student $8, 18 and Younger $13
Saturday, March 27, 2010 @ 2:00 PM: Eisenhower Auditorium
The musical A Year with Frog and Toad, based on characters and events in a series of popular children’s books by Arnold Lobel, earned three Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, during its run on Broadway. Now, the show that follows two friends—the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad—tours America in a charming production that entertains youngsters and appeals to their parents and grandparents. “Anyone who cherishes musical theatre and can beg or borrow a child from 4 up might be well advised to make a beeline … in search of tickets for A Year with Frog and Toad,” writes a New York Times reviewer. A jazzy score with a country-and-western thread and clever lyrics keep fingers snapping and toes tapping. Scenic designer Adrianne Lobel, the author’s daughter, developed the musical. Robert Reale composed the music, while Willie Reale wrote the book and lyrics. Audio description, which is especially helpful to patrons with sight loss, is available for this performance at no extra charge to ticket holders. McQuaide Blasko Attorneys at Law underwrites matinees for kids.

The Aulos Ensemble, formed by five graduates of The Juilliard School, has been garnering the attention of music lovers for more than thirty-five years. A New York Times critic describes the ensemble’s imaginative programs as “authentic Baroque performance at its best.” The ensemble—flutist Christopher Krueger, oboist Marc Schachman, violinist Linda Quan, cellist Myron Lutzke, and harpsichordist Arthur Haas—performs a program featuring George Frideric Handel’s Water Music and other works. The Penn State School of Music Baroque Ensemble, directed by Associate Professor Robert Nairn, joins the Aulos Ensemble to perform the three suites of Water Music, which premiered in 1717 when England’s King George I requested a concert on the River Thames. STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, utterly unique, and appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews, and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments—matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, and hubcaps—to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. As USA Today says, “STOMP finds beautiful noises in the strangest places.” STOMP—see what all the noise is about March 31 • Audio description, which is especially helpful to patrons with sight loss, is available for this performance at no extra charge to ticket buyers. Adult $36, University Park Student $15, 18 and Younger $29
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 @ 7:30 PM: Schwab Auditorium
Terence Blanchard, one of the most important figures to emerge from the 1980s jazz resurgence, has reached his widest audience through motion pictures. His performances on the soundtracks for Do the Right Thing and Mo’ Better Blues impressed Spike Lee so much the director has had Blanchard compose the score for each of his films since 1991, including Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Clockers, Summer of Sam, and Inside Man. The New Orleans native also composed the score for Lee’s When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, a four-hour HBO documentary about Hurricane Katrina. In addition to his extensive film work, the trumpeter and bandleader has maintained a far-reaching career on the concert circuit. When Wynton Marsalis left Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1982, Blanchard succeeded him and stayed with the band until 1986. Blanchard’s most popular CD is Let’s Get Lost, which features his quintet and leading jazz vocalists Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves, and Cassandra Wilson.
