Dave Kurten:  The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mt. Nittany Medical Center – “Mt. Nittany Life Forward”.  Today we’re going to talk about some volunteer opportunities at Mt. Nittany Medical Center and our guest is Vickie Morgan, Director of Volunteer Services at Mt. Nittany Medical Center, thanks for spending some time with us today.

Vickie Morgan:  Happy to be here.

Dave Kurten:  Why is it important to volunteer?

Vickie Morgan:  I am a firm believer that volunteering is the best way for one person to make a difference in our community.  There are many needs, and Mt. Nittany Medical Center has many needs as well.

Dave Kurten:  What is required of hospital volunteers?

Vickie Morgan:  Well, our hospital is responsible to a lot of different agencies and so volunteers need to be handled pretty much like employees; they do need to complete an application, schedule an interview, and then if we find a mutually agreeable placement we will ask them to come back for a group orientation and then further on the job training.  So, there’s a lot involved.

Dave Kurten:  What are some of the opportunities to volunteer at Mt. Nittany Medical Center?

Vickie Morgan:  We have a variety of opportunities both in direct patient contact and behind the scenes opportunities.  For example, we always need help in our snack bar, our gift shop, our reception desks in the various areas of the hospital, and then of course like I said on direct patient contact areas like patient floors or the emergency department.  The needs are constantly changing and in the near future, if you’ve been watching we’ve been expanding our facilities, so in the near future we’ll have even more needs.

Dave Kurten:  Where can our listeners get more information about volunteering at the Mt. Nittany Medical Center?

Vickie Morgan:  They can go on our website, www.mountnittany.org, or they can call our Volunteer Office, 814-234-6170.
