A Year with Frog and Toad
Saturday, March 27, 2010 @ 2:00 PM: Eisenhower Auditorium
Cost: Adult $18, University Park Student $8, 18 and Younger $13
The musical A Year with Frog and Toad, based on characters and events in a series of popular children’s books by Arnold Lobel, earned three Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, during its run on Broadway. Now, the show that follows two friends—the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad—tours America in a charming production that entertains youngsters and appeals to their parents and grandparents. “Anyone who cherishes musical theatre and can beg or borrow a child from 4 up might be well advised to make a beeline … in search of tickets for A Year with Frog and Toad,” writes a New York Times reviewer. A jazzy score with a country-and-western thread and clever lyrics keep fingers snapping and toes tapping. Scenic designer Adrianne Lobel, the author’s daughter, developed the musical. Robert Reale composed the music, while Willie Reale wrote the book and lyrics. Audio description, which is especially helpful to patrons with sight loss, is available for this performance at no extra charge to ticket holders. McQuaide Blasko Attorneys at Law underwrites matinees for kids.

The Penn State School of Music Baroque Ensemble, directed by Associate Professor Robert Nairn, joins the Aulos Ensemble to perform the three suites of Water Music, which premiered in 1717 when England’s King George I requested a concert on the River Thames. STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, utterly unique, and appeals to audiences of all ages. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments—matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, and hubcaps—to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. As USA Today says, “STOMP finds beautiful noises in the strangest places.” STOMP—see what all the noise is about March 31 • Audio description, which is especially helpful to patrons with sight loss, is available for this performance at no extra charge to ticket buyers.
