Fully Committed
Saturday, July 10, 2010 @ 7:30 PM: Millbrook Playhouse
Category: Theater
Shows on various dates between July 1-11 in the Caberet. This devastatingly funny one act follows a day in the life of Sam Peliczowski, an out-of-work actor who mans the red-hot reservation line at Manhattan's number-one restaurant. Coercion, threats, bribes, histrionics—a cast of desperate callers will stop at nothing in their zeal to land a prime reservation, or the right table. Amid the barrage, Sam's got his own needs to contend with—his recently widowed dad wants him home for Christmas, and he's up for a choice part at Lincoln Center. While juggling scheming socialites, name-dropping wannabes, fickle celebrities and egomaniacal bosses, can he manage to look out for himself? A wonderful acting challenge, FULLY COMMITTED has forty wildly diverse characters designed to be played by a single versatile performer.

Category: Educational;For All;For Kids;Community Annc
Celebrate books and local authors at the first annual Book Fest PA on Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 10 AM to 5 PM in Schlow Centre Region Library’s Downsbrough Room. Local (and not so local) authors will be there to present short talks on their work, sign books, meet their fans and talk about writing. Each hour, a different author will present a behind-the-scenes view of their book, their writing experience and their inspirations (or aspirations?). Our guest author will be Christopher McDougall. Christopher McDougall is a former war correspondent for the Associated Press and a three-time National Magazine Award finalist. His second book, Born to Run, has been on the New York Times bestseller list for over eight months. Born to Run is the story of the story of a fifty-mile race between the world's greatest distance runners, the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico, and an odd band of super-athletic Americans. McDougall usually does his own running barefoot, among the Amish farms around his home in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. McDougall will speak at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church and then will do a book signing at Schlow immediately following. All Book Fest PA programs are free of charge.

Triumph Of Love
Saturday, July 10, 2010 @ 7:30 PM: Millbrook Playhouse
Category: Theater
Showing various days July 8-18. Love can make a woman do strange things. Like lie about her past. Or give up her career for the man she loves. Or throw off her princessly raiment and disguise herself as a young man in order to infiltrate the guarded "men-only" palace compound of an exiled prince she's admired from afar, who is secretly plotting to murder her and usurp her throne. Such is the state of things in James Magruder, Jeffrey Stock and Susan Birkenhead's hilarious, tongue-in-cheek, anachronistic adaptation of the classic Marivaux comedy "Triumph Of Love."

Cost: $14 General Admission
Category: Mature Audience;Music;Theater
You're reading the official blurb, or short summary, of [title of show]. Blurb. That's a funny word. We spent a lot of time on this blurb so please read the whole blurb. [title of show] is a musical about two nobodies named Hunter and Jeff who decide to write a completely original musical starring themselves and their attractive and talented lady friends, Susan and Heidi. Their musical, [title of show], gets into the New York Musical Theatre Festival and becomes a hit. Then it gets an off-Broadway production at the Vineyard Theatre and wins three Obie Awards! Then (drum roll if you've got a drum) it's announced that their musical is going to Broadway (hooray!) and people start seeing this blurb everywhere! They read that The New York Times called [title of show] “DELECTABLE ENTERTAINMENT! A postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like Babes in Arms, Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line." Fully intrigued, people snatch up tickets and help make Hunter and Jeff's life-long dream come true! The musical received a Tony Award® nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 2009. (Age restriction; 18 & over only)

Dark Star Orchestra
Saturday, July 10, 2010 @ 8:00 PM: The State Theatre
Cost: $25
Category: Concert;For All;Great Date;Music
There are a lot of cover bands around and a lot of those are Grateful Dead cover bands. You've seen them, they're good. Most include the music of Jerry Garcia, Bobby Weir et al with other cover songs and some originals mixed in. DSO is a different breed of "Dead" band. What Dark Star Orchestra does is recreate the Grateful Dead. Not with hippie wigs and fake beards but through the live music. They play the setlist song for song in the same arrangements used by the Dead members of that period. When you're at a DSO show you may really be in the Providence Civic Center back in May of '81. Or you could even be at the 1973 Denver Coliseum show listening to Weather Report Suite. Who knows? Actually no one does and that's part of the trip. The date of the show to be recreated is kept secret right up till the performance. Oh, there are clues (the number and placement of microphones, the keyboard setup, a midi guitar) and the secret becomes part of a game. Usually the audience in front starts throwing out guesses toward the end of the first set. The wiser observer waits for the start of the second set to venture a showdate. Sometimes a curious look comes over the faces of the audience as they realize, "Hey! I was at this show!" followed by a smile as they realize...they're at the show again! Remember: This is an exhibition, not a competition. So please....no wagering! The original showdate, for those who are DEADBASE-impaired, is announced at the end of the night usually followed by an extended encore of the band's choosing.

UAJA ComposT Facility Saturday Hours for Compost Sales
Saturday, July 10, 2010 @ 09:00 AM: State College
Category: Agriculture;Green Living
UAJA ComposT is a mixture of hardwood sawdust - and clean municipal wastewater biosolids. The resulting high quality compost product is rich in organic matter and plant nutrients, resembling coarse peat moss, and is excellent for amending depleted soils, enriching planting mixes and enhancing the growth of turf, ornamental plant species and horticultural crops. Our facility optimizes and accelerates the process of composting which occurs at a much slower pace in nature. The process we use also generates enough heat to essentially pasteurize the product. Residual weed, fruit, and vegetable seeds, and micro-organisms do not survive the process. The organic, slow-release nature of the nutrients in UAJA ComposT makes them less susceptible to loss through leaching than conventional chemical fertilizers. In addition, UAJA ComposT possesses an array of physical, chemical, and biological properties, which are difficult to find in any other product. Aside from being an economical and uniform source of organic matter, UAJA ComposT also Improves Soil Structure, Reduces Soil Compaction, Increases Water Infiltration, Soil Aeration, Moisture Holding, Capacity and Mineral Nutrient Uptake Efficiency, Provides Slow-release, and Nutrients for Plant Growth. In addition to the regular hours of 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday, our ComposT facility will be open on the following Saturdays from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM: July 10th, August 7th, September 11th, and October 2nd. ComposT is $5 per cubic yard or $2 per car with container. Call 814-238-5361 for more information.
