As part of its efforts to reinvigorate opera and reach out to a broader public, the Metropolitan Opera launched a groundbreaking program in December of 2006 —The Metropolitan Opera: Live in High-Definition, a series of opera performances transmitted live in HD to movie theaters around the world. From its inaugural season, the series enjoyed critical acclaim and global box office success, attracting an audience of more than 325,000 attendees for six live and six encore events in seven countries. In the second season, the number of performances increased to eight live and eight encore events, seen in 17 countries, with audience numbers nearly tripling to more than 935,000. The Met: Live in HD returns this fall, with 9 transmissions scheduled during the 2009–10 season. All performances take place on Saturdays at 1:00pm and are transmitted live. We have seen growing numbers of attendees here at the theatre. We have even created a group of State Theatre Opera Buffs with pre-opera discussions and luncheons. See what you’ve been missing!

Film: Dark Side of Oz PG-13
Saturday, February 06, 2010 @ 12:00 AM: The State Theatre
Cost: $5
Category: Concert;Music
The State Theatre decided to bring back Dark Side of Oz for the second time after two sold out shows last year. Come see what it’s all about on Friday, February 5 at 7pm, 9:30pm or midnight! The Wizard of Oz has been a classic film, ever since it came out. Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon has been a must-have on any album collectors shelf since 1973. Now you can enjoy them together - on the State Theatre’s 31 foot big screen with state of the art surround sound. When Dark Side of the Moon is played simultaneously with the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, numerous images from the film appear to synchronize with the music and lyrics. All band members (save Roger Waters) and engineer Alan Parsons have firmly stated that the phenomenon is a coincidence. This effect has often been called Dark Side of Oz or Dark Side of the Rainbow. The title of the music video experience comes from a combination of the album title and the film’s song “Over the Rainbow.” It is also a reference to the rainbow from the prism design on the cover of the Pink Floyd album.Arguably, playing any two media together will produce an impression of a striking amount of coincidence.
