David Sanborn with Joey DeFrancesco
Tuesday, February 02, 2010 @ 8:00 PM: The State Theatre
Cost: $32
Category: Concert;Great Date;Music;Nightlife
David Sanborn, a renowned saxophone player, is an artist, whose music has been an inspiration for countless musicians across several genres, including jazz, R&B and pop. Sanborn helped define the saxophone’s modern sound while influencing a generation. In 1975, Sanborn released his first solo album, Taking Off, eventually scoring massive popular hits with 1980’s Hideaway and 1981’s Grammy winning Voyeur. David won his second Grammy in 1986 for the album Double Vision, and in the late 1980s he hosted one of the most remarkable musical television programs of all time, Night Music. Sanborn is both a musician and artist. He is as eager today as he was in his youth to continue pushing boundaries and to continue making music that challenges the mind while rewarding the heart and soul.

Joey DeFancesco
Joey DeFrancesco is claimed to be the baddest B-3 burner in the business by organ enthusiasts. It is an accusation supported by his five consecutive DownBeat Critics Poll awards for 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. With over 20 solo releases and historic associations with legends such as Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Bobby Hutcherson, Elvin Jones and John McLaughlin, DeFrancesco's place in the idiom’s history is cemented.

The Actors’ Gang The Trial of the Catonsville Nine
Tuesday, February 02, 2010 @ 7:30 PM: Eisenhower Auditorium
Cost: Adult $32, University Park Student $10, 18 and Younger $26
Category: Great Date;Theater
In Daniel Berrigan’s The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, The Actors’ Gang of Los Angeles brings to life the dramatic historical trial in 1968 of two Catholic priests and seven fellow activists who committed what they believed to be an act of civil disobedience in protest of the war in Vietnam. Their civil dissent galvanized the national protest movement. While condemned as criminals in a court of law, the Catonsville Nine were hailed as patriots in the streets during one of America’s most turbulent eras. The play asserts the moral imperative of committing civil disobedience when national hubris and global corporate interests act against the welfare of the nation and the wellbeing of the international community. Oscar-winning actor Tim Robbins co-founded The Actors’ Gang in 1981 and serves as the company’s artistic director. The presentation includes a post-performance discussion among the actors and audience members. Audio description, which is especially helpful to patrons with sight loss, is available for this performance at no extra charge to ticket holders. Sponsors: Sandra Zaremba and Richard Brown
