The Cherry Orchard
Wednesday, November 05, 2008 @ 8:00 PM: Playhouse Theatre
Category: For All;Theater
A drama presented by the Penn State School of Theatre. Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, a comedic and bitter play about a magnificent house filled with foolish people. During the last years of Tsarist rule, this noble family is facing poverty and ruin due to a financial downturn, but nobody in the house knows how to begin to deal with the problem (save a friendly former servant, who is utterly ignored). Chekhov's brilliant satire ends with the noise of cutting crews destroying the famous cherry orchard that surrounds the estate.

Cost: $26
Category: Concert;Music;Community Annc
The Hold Steady and Drive-By Truckers will be hitting the road together for the "Rock and Roll Means Well Tour" coming to The State Theatre November 5 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $26. The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn based rock band that got their start in 2003. In the beginning, they planned to keep it small, no touring or recording, only local shows. That quickly ended and in their short career they have released 4 albums. The most current of their albums is "Stay Positive" released in July of 2008. With each consecutive album, The Hold Steady has received increased attention from international audiences and the media, earning almost universal press praise for their performances and records. Drive-By Truckers are a rock band based in Athens, Georgia, though three out of five members (Mike Cooley, Patterson Hood, and Shonna Tucker) originally hail from The Shoals region of Northern Alabama. Their music is noteworthy for its "three axe attack," or three guitars as well as bass and drums. Their lyrics often revolve around drifters and outlaws trying to survive in economically depressed small towns. Drive-By Truckers has released 9 albums, including their most recent Brighter Than Creation's Dark, which was released earlier this year.
